Darjeeling Tea: The Champagne of Teas

Nestled in the misty, high-altitude foothills of the Indian Himalayas, the microclimates of West Bengal produce Darjeeling—a tea so distinct it is protected globally by a Geographical Indication (GI) trademark. Cultivated from historic estate gardens dating back to 1841, true Darjeeling is celebrated for its complex, evolving flavor profiles that range from crisp, vibrant springtime florals to the prized, deeply sweet muscatel notes of mid-summer. Explore our curated selection of loose-leaf single-estate harvests and signature blends, meticulously selected by Level 5 Tea Masters to deliver an uncompromised, sophisticated steep.

The Terroir & Heritage of True Darjeeling

Often referred to as the "Champagne of Teas," Darjeeling owes its worldwide renown to a unique convergence of altitude, soil chemistry, and climate. Grown exclusively within the steep, sun-drenched valleys of the Darjeeling district in West Bengal, India, these delicate Camellia sinensis plants thrive at elevations up to 4,000 feet. The extreme altitude slows leaf growth, concentrating the plant’s natural amino acids and essential oils to yield an incredibly aromatic, bright, and nuanced liquor that cannot be replicated anywhere else on earth.

The Four Seasonal Flushes

Unlike standard black teas, a Darjeeling’s character shifts dramatically based on the exact month the leaves are plucked. Our Master Blenders source across the region's premier harvest windows:

  • First Flush (Springtime Harvest): Plucked between March and April following the first spring rains, these tender young buds yield a pale, golden-green liquor. It is celebrated for its brisk, highly vibrant astringency and delicate, fresh floral aroma.
  • Second Flush (The Muscatel Harvest): Harvested in May and June as the mountain sun warms the soil, the mature leaves develop a dense, full-bodied complexity. This window produces the famous, sought-after "muscatel" flavor profile—reminiscent of ripe, sweet muscat grapes and dark honey.
  • Summer Flush (The Monsoon Harvest): Gathered between July and September during the heavy rains, these larger leaves brew a robust, coppery, and deeply refreshing cup with subtle musky spice accents, making them ideal bases for premium afternoon blends.
  • Autumnal Flush (The Final Harvest): A rare, short harvest spanning late October and November before the tea bushes enter winter dormancy. Autumnal Darjeeling brews a deep, rich, copper-toned liquor with a bold, nutty, and exceptionally smooth finish.

The Connoisseur's Guide to Varietal Profiles

While traditional black Darjeeling undergoes a rigorous four-stage process of withering, rolling, oxidation, and drying, the region’s unique leaf material allows our Tea Masters to craft rare variations. Our Green Darjeeling skips oxidation entirely to preserve fresh, grassy-sweet antioxidants, while our rare White Darjeeling consists only of hand-plucked, sun-withered downy buds for a silk-smooth, ethereal mouthfeel. For a balanced alternative, our semi-oxidized Darjeeling Oolong combines the floral brightness of a green tea with the deep honeyed complexity of a second flush.

Brewing & Etiquette

To fully appreciate the complex top notes of a premium estate Darjeeling, tea connoisseurs strongly advise enjoying the infusion entirely neat—free from the addition of milk, sugar, or lemon. Milk, in particular, will instantly mask the delicate, floral volatile oils of a first or second flush. To steep loose leaf perfectly, bring fresh water to a rolling boil (100°C) and infuse one teaspoon of leaves per cup for precisely two to three minutes in a pre-heated porcelain or glass teapot.
