Experience a masterfully unified alliance of tea traditions. Our Genmaicha Spiced Green Tea represents an extraordinary union of Japanese estate cultivation and historic Indian spice orthodoxy. We blend high-grade, steamed Japanese Sencha with fire-toasted rice and a signature Masala spice bouquet to create a luminous, complex, and savory cup.
The blend's depth is rooted in its meticulous mechanical composition:
The Genmaicha style traces back to 15th-century Japan. Legend tells of a house servant who inadvertently dropped roasted rice into a warlord's green tea. The resulting thermal immersion unlocked a unique, satisfying flavor profile so profound that the warlord decreed it a staple for morning focus—a custom that has endured for centuries.

"Based on long ago experiences with genmaicha chai in tea houses, I don't find the taste I was longing for in this product. No matter how long I brew it or how much tea I use per cup, I can't get the nice flavor of the rice plus the teac."

"Really good and roasty. I never knew what variety of green tea I was drinking at Japanese restaurants, but now I know"

"GenMaicha: I know adding toasted rice to the tea was originally a way to cut the cost of tea making Genmaicha the ""poor man's"" tea. Being a bit of a tea snob (way back when anyway) I refused to try Genmaicha (toasted rice in tea, I dont want rice tea. . . ) eventually someone made a cup for me and I tried it. It was this cup that made me realize how dumb it was to refuse to try something just because other people consider it beneath them (like I did) Friends, try everything and decide for yourself what you like, don't let anyone decide for you, you may like the ""fake"" (flavored tea) and that's ok, why deny yourself because other people say it not ""real"" tea. Anyway sermon over, Genmaicha does not taste like toasted rice, it tastes like tea, what the rice does it give it a subtle undercurrent, toasty and nutty, that may not sound like what you want in a tea but if you've never had Genmaicha try it, it may very well surprise you. (it sure had hell surprised me) Now having said that, how does this Genmaicha stack up IMO. Upon opening I was pleased to note that 4 ounces was more than I expected it to be. I was also pleased to note that the pouches were both opaque and resealable, (tea leaves oxidize when exposed to the air and the essential oils break down in UV, so packaging matters for tea) The Smell was as I remember Sencha with a subtle toasty nutty almost popcorn undercurrent, not strong but stronger than the Sencha that I purchased (reviewed that yesterday) for me this was encouraging. The brew: I have a rather large tea ball, spherical and approximately 1 1/4 in. (3cm) in diameter which I filled 3/4 full this time (to give the dry leaves room to swell and release their essential oils. ) I then heated on the stove 12 cups of water to a temp of 175f this time (79c, and yes I have a thermometer) and dropped in the tea. 10 minutes to steep (yes on a timer) I realize that is what many would consider too long for a green tea, but after the Sencha I decided to make this the starting point (I wanted to extract as much flavor as possible from the brew. ) After the steep I poured a cup and the taste was what I remember, Sencha with that lovely subtle undercurrent, toasty and nutty. The taste was not as strong as I had hoped but it was stronger than the Sencha that I brewed the previous day. I suppose 12 cups is too much, may have to cut it down to 8 which for me is a bit disappointing having said that this is definitely a good tea and at a very reasonable price ($5. 00 US / 4 Ounces) I am satisfied. After the very disappointing Sencha this a good rebound 4/5 in my book, would have been a 5/5 if it has been stronger, lovely taste, no aftertaste, no bitterness, just wish it had been a little stronger, having said that once the price is factored in this is a winner in my book, even if the 4 ounces wont make as much as had hoped it would. 6/21/2021 Purchased 6/29/2021 Received 6/30/2021 Reviewed"
