The Czar Nicolas Russian Caravan Tea blend from English Tea Store has a history that goes back hundreds of years. In the city of Xian, in central China, one can see a historical marker that is acknowledged to be the beginning of the Silk Road - the trail that lead to central Asia (areas such as the Caucuses and the Black Sea). One of the commodities taken along the Silk Road was tea. The tea that was carried on the camel trains left a lasting impression on central Asia - so much so that to supplement their importation of tea, tea was cultivated in the region.
This tea has a delicate cup with a lively sprightly slightly toasty notes. A hint of Lapsang Souchong relives the heady days and mystery of the Royal Court of St. Petersburg. During the Czar's time tea was the most important drink after vodka in Russia.
50% or more of this tea comes from Fair Trade estates that are part of the Ethical Tea Partnership. The ETP is an initiative started within the tea industry to monitor and regulate living and working conditions on estates around the world.

Tastes like a cigar
If "sprightly smoky" means it has the aftertaste of the smoke left behind from your grandpa's cheap stogie, then sure, it's smoky. I'm glad I bought this as a sample and not as a lot of tea. It smells like the bottom of an ashtray. Maybe it requires a more discerning taste than mine. I don't like cigars.

Russian
A nice Russian. A relatively mild smokey flavor. I'll buy it again.

CZAR NICOLAS RUSSIAN CARAVAN TEA - LOOSE LEAF
Russian Caravan and/or Scottish Breakfast are my "go to" teas now that I don't do coffee anymore. They have gotten to be very difficult to find at the retail level as coffee chains have turned away from traditional teas and hot tea in general to pursue fruity, milky stuff. I really appreciate that I have a reliable source of an excellent blend of traditional Russian Caravan from the English Tea Shop.

Not for me - too mossy/tobacco driven
I really enjoy the sample sizes from ETS. Have found many new delightful teas in those little pouches. This was not to my taste. I'll use the analogy of Scotch. I enjoy a good Scotch, but not peated. Some of my friends prefer the peated versions best. Not me, can't stand it, it really puts me off. Czar Nicholas Russian Caravan has an overpowering "peaty" smell right out of the package, and same taste to it when brewed - barely diminishes. The description says "delicate" and "slightly toasty." That was not my experience of this tea at all; I found it strong, mossy, smoky and tasting of tobacco and dirt - the "peated Scotch" of teas. If you like peat/moss/earth taste, you may like it. This one's a miss for me, but looking forward to trying others.

not what i expected
I was buying different tea from a different companies, has russian caravan with great flavor; they are getting pricy so I bought this blend here, horrible taste, don't understand is this stink is bergamot's flavor or some smokey as video telling, anyway never again buy here, thanks for your business

RUSSIAN CARAVAN
very NICE.
-
Reminded me of a Cardamom Pod
This tea was not what I was searching for. Looking for a tea called Russian Gold, which is more mild. This particular tea's taste was too overwhelming.
-
Excellent
This is one of my favorites. Nice smoky flavor but more body then straight Lapsan
-
Strong stuff.
Not to everyone's taste, I think. A bit of old sweat socks in there...Add a bit to a less robust tea to bump up the flavor.
