The Earl Grey Tea blend from English Tea Store is a blend of Chinese and Indian teas scented with oil from the citrus bergamot fruit - a sort of orange. Stories about the origins of Earl Grey are numerous. One such tale tells how a British diplomat, on a mission to China, saved the life of a Mandarin. As a gift of gratitude, the diplomat was given the recipe for this flavored tea. Upon his return to Britain, the diplomat presented the tea to the Prime Minister of the day, Earl Grey. Another story says it was the Prime Minister himself who saved the Mandarin. In any event, it was the Prime Minister of England (1830-1834) Earl Grey who made this tea fashionable.

The 3 high-grown districts of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula and Uva, produce flavorful teas that have the classic tea character which is noted by floral bouquet and flavor notes, touches of mild astringency, bright coppery color and, most importantly, perfect for use as the base tea of our flavored teas. Dimbula and the western estates of Nuwara Eliya have a major quality peak during Jan/Feb, whereas Uva and the eastern estates of Nuwara Eliya have their peak in July/Aug. This peak period allows us to buy the best for our flavored tea blends several times during the year, ensuring top quality and freshness. Using flavoring oils, not crystals, gives the tea drinker an olfactory holiday before indulging in a liquid tea treat.

Some practitioners of Chinese traditional medicine believe that bergamot can assist in reducing anxiety and depression.

Earl Grey Tea is gluten free, as well as nuts, wheat, crustacea, eggs, milk/dairy, sulfites, and soy lecithin free. This tea is packed at a factory that has nuts on the premises.

Caffeine content: Medium - This tea contains natural caffeine found in the L. Camellia Sinensis family. A cup of black tea steeped in boiled water for 5 minutes will contain between 27 to 35 milligrams of caffeine. An equal sized cup of coffee will contain between 80 - 100 milligrams of caffeine. Caffeine quickly becomes soluble in very hot water. If you wish to reduce the caffeine level in this tea, briefly rinsing the tea leaves in extremely hot water will reduce the caffeine content between 25-50% with only a minor effect on taste.

Antioxidant Content: High - 7.50 - 9.99% polyphenols by dry weight. The longer you steep your tea the more polyphenols will be extracted. (Test results based on 5 minutes steeping time. Polyphenol percentages may fluctuate with lot, grade of tea, testing method, temperature of water and freshness of tea). More antioxidants are extracted from tea (L. Camellia Sinesis) the longer it is brewed. And the more tea is used, the greater the antioxidant benefit.

Nutritional Information: Amount per Serving; Serving size 2.5 grams of loose tea. Makes 8 fluid ounces or 240 milliliters.

No comparison between this and what comes in tea bags. Well worth the slight extra effort it takes to brew it.

      Earl Grey Loose Tea-Coarse

Posted by patty on Aug 12th 2019

I have bought the Earl Grey with Extra Bergamot loose tea for years from the English Tea Store. I love its flavor and aroma, but it is so finely ground that there is always a sediment in the bottom of the pot and cup. I like the fact that the regular Earl Grey is a coarse loose tea, but I prefer the flavor and aroma of the Extra Bergamot.

      Good, but

I would like a little more bergamot, this a light tea and needs something to give it more flavor. Otherwise a very fine tea if on the light side.

I love making this tea. It smells wonderful and tastes great! Make sure you get the coarse blend, though. The fine one is not nearly as good.

Earl Grey coarse loose leaf tea

Stronger bergomot flavour than US's Bigelow but just a dash of milk makes it a really pleasant tea...any time of the day or night. Just takes a few cuppas to get used to. I had no trouble getting this tea to darken....just bob the tea strainer a few times while it's steeping.

This is our regular tea, we have bought it for several years now. My husband had throat cancer/radiation and must drink warm tea before he eats so he can swallow ok....he loves the smell, flavor of this tea way better than any of the boxed type at the stores.

I buy this by the pound for my husband and it is the only Earl Grey he wants to drink! We have tried many different brands, but this is the one he keeps coming back to, it is an excellent choice.
