The Nine Bend Black Dragon Tea blend from English Tea Store is full bodied with deep burgundy depth and delightful oaky notes. This fabulous tea is one of the finest examples of a Chinese black tea available on the market. Incidentally, it is also considered to be one of the luckiest teas in all of Asia.

In 1851, a tea producer, Mr. Huyinca, named this blend from the lucky 9 Bend River that flowed through his birth-place of Wuyishan (9 is a lucky number in China), and the symbol of the black Dragon, long considered lucky in China. His tea had won just about every award there was to be won throughout China and Europe. As its popularity grew, the tea came to be regarded as a precious gift amongst the nobility and ruling classes of both places.

Caffeine content: Medium - This tea contains natural caffeine found in the L. Camellia Sinensis family. A cup of black tea steeped in boiled water for 5 minutes will contain between 27 to 35 milligrams of caffeine. An equal sized cup of coffee will contain between 80 - 100 milligrams of caffeine. Caffeine quickly becomes soluble in very hot water. If you wish to reduce the caffeine level in this tea, briefly rinsing the tea leaves in extremely hot water will reduce the caffeine content between 25-50% with only a minor effect on taste.

Antioxidant Content: High - The longer you steep your tea the more polyphenols will be extracted. (Test results based on 5 minutes steeping time. Polyphenol percentages may fluctuate with lot, grade of tea, testing method, temperature of water and freshness of tea). More antioxidants are extracted from tea (L. Camellia Sinesis) the longer it is brewed. And the more tea is used, the greater the antioxidant benefit.

Not as tasty as some I bought several years ago (perhaps due to a different crop, or a different blend?). Still I will continue to buy it.

This tea has a bold, smooth taste. Just what I look froward to, and need, for my morning cup.

This is an excellent tea. I enjoy waiting for it to steep in my infuser and the tea itself provides me with a "pick me up" at any time of day. There is never an aftertaste with this product. I am so glad I tried it.

      Good Tea

Good deep dark Keemun-type flavor with light smokiness. Not overly strong either, probably due to the large leaves. A great flavorful tea to drink with no added milk or sugar. I generally stay away from smoky teas like Lapsang Souchong, after a brief fling, because the woodsy smoky scent and taste became overwhelming to me. This is much more enjoyable than the heavier-smoked teas I've tried in the past. I'd order it again if it was on sale, as the price is kind of steep. Tea leaves are neat in their needly, long, and almost uniform appearance, if you like that sort of thing - definitely shows that this is a skillfully and carefully produced tea!
