Description

Czar Nicolas Russian Caravan Tea - Loose Leaf Pouches

The Czar Nicolas Russian Caravan Tea blend from English Tea Store has a history that goes back hundreds of years. In the city of Xian, in central China, one can see a historical marker that is acknowledged to be the beginning of the Silk Road - the trail that lead to central Asia (areas such as the Caucuses and the Black Sea). One of the commodities taken along the Silk Road was tea. The tea that was carried on the camel trains left a lasting impression on central Asia - so much so that to supplement their importation of tea, tea was cultivated in the region.

This tea has a delicate cup with a lively sprightly slightly toasty notes. A hint of Lapsang Souchong relives the heady days and mystery of the Royal Court of St. Petersburg. During the Czar's time tea was the most important drink after vodka in Russia.

50% or more of this tea comes from Fair Trade estates that are part of the Ethical Tea Partnership. The ETP is an initiative started within the tea industry to monitor and regulate living and working conditions on estates around the world.

This is my wife's second favorite tea. That is only because her second morning cup is Russian Caravan. This tea is impossible to find in supermarkets. About a half teaspoon of this tea in a large bag makes a fine medium bodied and very flavorful cup of tea with a hint of the smokiness of Lapsang. It is very satisfying in the mid to late afternoon and treats the palette nicely. Excellent value for the price and almost always available!

I first tried Russian Caravan tea searching my local store for something "different" (I'm still exploring what teas I like).
I found the bagged store variety OK, worth pursueing.
Then I got the loose leaf from English Tea Store.
Love it! It WILL remind you of sleeping next to a campfire... or a house fire... or something. That's the part I like! If you're not fond of smokey, you won't like this tea. If you like smoked jerky, smoked bacon, etc, give this a try!
Sugar and a squeeze of lemon make for a really nice cup of tea.

This has a stronger smoky taste than other Caravan tea I have bought. It is not to my liking, but if you like a smoky tea you will like this one.

For fans of Lapsang Souchong, I recommend this tea. It has a slightly less smokey component to it, but it has sweeter notes that Lapsang does not have. It is very good with milk and sugar!

Delectable and Exquisite Review by Linda

I have wanted to try this since I first smelled this same tea in an upscale Coffee/Tea shoppe in our metropolis. I waited too long to purchase and it was no longer carried there. When I was purchasing our usual order from English Tea Store, I happened upon the Car Nicolas Russian Caravan Tea and by description was convinced it was the one I had wanted to buy before.
I brewed a pot and instantly was smitten ! This is Delectable and Exquisite. I Love it for a change from our beloved Scottish Breakfast and Earl Grey Loose Lea from English Tea Store.. This is one I will be ordering for aye!

For many years I have had friends tell me how much they love lapsang suchong, which I tried on a few occasions and decided "This is just not for me." Then about a year ago, on a whim, I ordered the English Tea Store's "Czar Nicholas Russian Caravan." I did not sample it immediately but one day made a pot. Initially I was not persuaded, but after two or three cups I came to like it more and more. Now I make a pot about once a week as a change from my established favorites. I don't like it too strong, and I always add sugar and Half&Half. The colder the weather, the more I enjoy it. Definitely better to me than Twining's lapsang suchong.

This is a great tea. I drink it when I want some variety and usually in the afternoon. Smokey but not as strong as Lapsang. Lots of subtle flavor if you hold the tea in your mouth for a few seconds. Great tea

I love this tea. It’s strong and bold. The taste stands out. It’s a great afternoon boost. I save it for when I’m in the mood for a strong, provocative, energizing cup of tea. It’s not for everyone but it’s one of my favorites. Bold, Provocative

This tea just might save you from those high Starbucks prices. The smell is intoxicating and the taste is unlike anything that you’ve ever known in a tea. But don’t steep it too long! Use more but steep less. That’s the secret to this unique tea, otherwise it will be bitter and practically undrinkable. Goes great with dessert, each sip a cleansing wash to the pallette. This is one of the best tea I ever had the pleasure to drink. In a nutshell it tastes a bit like somebody droped a drop of a good barbeque sauce in your tea. Just a few warnings. First - this is love it or hate it tea no middle ground. Second DO NOT OVERSTEEP or you will get a bitter mess nobody wants to drink. Third - You absolutely must give it a try. Amazing Tea

I ordered this tea having known it from my early youth. This version has the smoky taste but lacks the lingering legatto of smoke I have gotten from other version. I am sure it can be improved, but for the time being, I am happy with it. A gem that can be polished

I was brought up drinking Lapsang Souchong tea and I love it to this day. Russian Caravan gives a nice variation as it combines the smokiness of Lapsang with a more floral note of Earl Grey. If you like Lapsang then I recommend trying this tea. A treat for Lapsang lovers

This tea is very authentic! I went to Russia recently and was served this tea after every meal: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The smoky flavor was what was unique about this tea that made me seek it out so I could enjoy it back home. This is a perfect match to the authentic Russian tea I love! Very authentic!

I love this tea. It is dark and rich and makes me feel I’m drinking tea around a campfire. I love camping so that’s a good thing! It tastes great with just a bit of sugar and milk if I’m feeling decadent. I like both tea and coffee but recently had to give up coffee, and this tea satisfies when I’d like to be drinking coffee instead. best tea substitute if you have to give up coffe

The smokiness of this blend can be over powering so be mindful of your measurement and steeping time. Otherwise it is a thoroughly enjoyable tea with many subtle hidden flavors. If you add just a wee bit of milk you suddenly release a natural sweetness you wouldn't have otherwise expected. Excellent anytime tea. A great bracer for the afternoon doldrums. Interesting Blend

This tea smells like a campfire. I really wasn't sure if I'd like it, but a friend on Facebook recommended it for a winter drink so I ordered it. I was even less sure after smelling it. But, on first taste my husband and I decided we love it. We steeped it for 2 minutes only, 1 teaspoon for cup loose in the teapot. It's excellent alone, with a little sugar and with some cream. We will drink it with pleasure. surprised I liked it very much!
